Important Information About Facial Surgery Recovery

woman after facial surgery

Facial surgery recovery focuses heavily on pain relief after the operation. You can do things like apply cool or hot compresses and adjust your eating to include only soft foods for a few days while healing begins. Dr. Kashmanian D.M.D. and the staff at Central New England Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery take the time to ensure you understand how to take advantage of these ache-soothing techniques after facial surgery.

Comfort Gel Pack Application: First 2 Days After Surgery

The Comfort Gel Pack is made for cold and hot use. The first two days following your surgery, the pack will be used cold unless instructed otherwise by your physician. To use it cold, freeze it for an hour or two, then place the cloth side against the area that hurts. If it feels too cold, wrap it in a towel before placing it against your face. Only keep the pack in place for 15 to 20 minutes.

Comfort Gel Pack: Day 3 and After

From the third day forward, use the microwave to heat the gel pack. In a 600-watt microwave, it should take 20 seconds to warm the pack adequately. If it isn't hot enough, heat it another 10 seconds, and then check to see if it’s a comfortable temperature. Put the pack against the affected area for 15 to 20 minutes, them remove it and wait at least an hour before the next application.

Special Information About the Comfort Pack

If Dr. Kashmanian D.M.D offers directions that vary from these, always follow his advice because he has special knowledge of your unique case. Never put your weight on the pack; it could break the pack and you would need to throw it away. Patients with circulatory problems should avoid using the pack with heat.

Meal Ideas For Facial Surgery Recovery

Stick to a variety of soft foods after oral surgery. Chewing hard foods can increase the pain you feel. You can, however, run some hard foods through the blender or food processor so you can enjoy them without hard chewing.  Meal ideas include mashed or smashed potatoes with soft additions such as cheese, soup and soft pastas.
